A day in the life of the Chickadee homeschool
How does homeschooling actually work? Are you enjoying homeschooling??
2 questions that I have been recently asked. So here is a Blog post of our usual, crazy, beautiful day.
7:00 am....Wake up time....usually the youngest wakes up the whole crew with her morning chatter and singing....or howling....lately.
7:00-8:30 is Breakfast, and kid shows....yup, I let my kids watch kid shows...Why?? Well, I am not a morning person, I hate mornings....I need some time to get my head in the game, have a shower, get my game face on, ( I don't wear makeup most days) but I need some time to get some coffee into myself, and eat my breakfast, while my kiddo's are nicely watching a few shows, while I pull myself together.
8:30-9:30am is tidy up time, dishwasher, floor, table, and getting school stuff organized and ready.
9:30-12 pm is school. We do about 1/2 hour in each subject, Math, reading, science, devotions, social studies, and art, and P.E. We have a few 10 min stretch breaks with some snacks. During school, Where Emi-lou, and Lady A and 3 join in for the first hour or so, and they play with "moon sand" or color, or look at books, playdoh or painting. Emi-lou is really eager to do school work, so we have been starting her on some preschool work sheets. Lady A gets bored after a bit and then we send her free to roam the living room, and find some toys to play with. Eventually Emi-lou usually joins her, and the fighting between them pursues. The spats are a regular event between them, and they are both very vocal and physical, when it comes to dealing with each other.
12 pm- 3pm is Lunch, then Nap time for the Lady A and quiet time or quiet play for the other 2 beauties. After 3 we try to get outside weather permitting, or just enjoy some noisy play time.
After that is when the crazy hours begin, trying to get dinner made, and or Come up with what on earth we are going to have for supper, while dodging Lady A in the kitchen, breaking up the fight, soothing the bonked bean, or snuggling with who ever needs a snuggle that moment. I have very snuggly little girls.
We also are a part of a couple homeschool groups, and we are looking into more that are more local to us, so that we can get out more. After Baby K #4 arrives, I know for my sake that I will need to get out, and battle the potential post part um blues head on with the support of other mommies like me.
I loving having Lady Tor Tor home and I know that she misses her friends, and it is going to take some time to establish some new friendships. With Time that will happen, this year was about getting a handle on the homeschooling lifestyle. It is a lifestyle. It is not always easy, I will be the first to let the world know that. There are big sacrifices, but I personally think they are worth it. Socialization is a HUGE topic for homeschoolers, and to be honest, I think homeschoolers are better communicators then the average student, because at homeschool groups, and other activities they are interacting with multiple age groups, and adults. They learn to take care of their home, their space. They are learning to be productive in the home because they have time to learn from mom and dad, and contributing to the family life, on the farm etc and being proud of it, it has become just a part of our life, home and school all together.
I personally went to public school for elementary, was homeschooled for grades 7 and 8 and when to the Christian school for grades 9 through 12, each with it's own pro's and con's. I however wished that I had homeschooled through most of it. When I was homeschooling all I wanted was a Locker....had my parents just bought me a a back pack and a locker, I would have probably been happier. Homeschooling gave me a huge opportunity to learn to love, to learn. I loved that I could have the freedom to learn at my own pace, if I didn't understand something I was not pushed to move on, I figured it out then moved on in my studies. With my girls I will be doing the same, and we have been, and we have seen such an improvement in Lady Tor Tor and her reading and her confidence in who she is.
One day at a time. One subject at a time. Life is good today!!
Blessings!!
